what does beef tallow do for hair?

beef tallow has been showing up everywhere in modern personal care. but using animal fats in grooming is nothing new.

so what is tallow actually doing in a hair product?

first: what is beef tallow?

tallow is rendered animal fat. in cosmetic formulas, it can be combined with waxes, oils and other ingredients to create rich, anhydrous products.

chulo uses beef tallow as part of the base of our styling formulas.

why use tallow in hair styling?

for chulo, tallow isn't there because we're promising some miracle hair-growth hack. we're not.

we use it as part of a formula designed to give dry, wavy hair the richness, softness, shine and control we want, without relying on a hard, crunchy finish.

does beef tallow grow hair?

we don't make that claim.

there's a difference between using an ingredient in a conditioning styling formula and having evidence that it causes new hair growth. research on topical tallow itself is still limited, and we think grooming brands should be clear about that distinction.

why chulo chose it

chulo was made with dry, wavy, harder-to-manage hair in mind. we wanted styling products that gave hair moisture + control without making it feel hard just to make it behave.

but tallow also connects back to something bigger for us. chulo was inspired by our abuelitos and the way they approached grooming: use what you have, take care of yourself, fix your hair before you leave the house.

tallow felt like a natural fit for a brand taking something from the past and making it work for the way we get ready today.

mexican moisture. no crunch. no flakes. puro flow.
